WORD FROM SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY
James 1:14-15 (NIV®)
“Each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.”
REFLECTION
THE SOVEREIGNTY OF JESUS
Some people think they have achieved such lofty spiritual heights that they are no longer tempted by the things of this world. Not so, James says. He says it is not just the people struggling with obvious sin who are tempted; it is every one of us, including you and me. Note, it is not something external that drags us away—a person, or something we watched or listened to. We indulge in those things because of the ungodly desires within us. When we follow Jesus, we become totally new creations spiritually, but we have been indulging “I want! I think! I feel!” for a while. The Bible says we have to put to death that old nature, and we have to do it every day. We must begin to say, “Self, what you want doesn’t dominate here anymore. There is a new Lord, and it is not you. Jesus is in charge of my life now.”

JESUS IS IN CHARGE NOW
THE SOVEREIGNTY OF JESUS
When temptation comes, and it will, imagine the path and outcome of engaging it. You can resist it and say no!

Heavenly Father, You have delivered me through the blood of Jesus. Help me renounce impatience and ingratitude and replace them with recognition of Your goodness and provision. Keep me from temptation and deliver me from evil so I might be pleasing in Your sight. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

“How hard it is to find a capable wife! She is worth far more than jewels! Her husband puts his confidence in her, and he will never be poor. As long as she lives, she does him good and never harm. She keeps herself busy making wool and linen cloth. She brings home food from out-of-the-way places, as merchant ships do. She gets up before daylight to prepare food for her family and to tell her servant women what to do. She looks at land and buys it, and with money she has earned she plants a vineyard. She is a hard worker, strong and industrious. She knows the value of everything she makes, and works late into the night. She spins her own thread and weaves her own cloth. She is generous to the poor and needy. She doesn't worry when it snows, because her family has warm clothing. She makes bedspreads and wears clothes of fine purple linen. Her husband is well known, one of the leading citizens. She makes clothes and belts, and sells them to merchants. She is strong and respected and not afraid of the future. She speaks with a gentle wisdom. She is always busy and looks after her family's needs. Her children show their appreciation, and her husband praises her. He says, "Many women are good wives, but you are the best of them all."
Proverbs 31:10-29
“"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.”
Jeremiah 29:11-12
"Love those who do not naturally appeal to you; let them have a place in your heart. And God will have a place for you in his heart."
