WORD FROM SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY

Philippians 3:13-14 (NIV®)

“Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

REFLECTION

ALL THOSE THINGS ARE NOTHING COMPARED TO WHAT I’VE FOUND IN CHRIST JESUS

When we think about “forgetting what is behind” in a spiritual context, what comes to mind? We probably think about the times when we didn’t choose godliness, or we failed to speak up for Jesus, or we chose to be tight-fisted instead of generous toward the Lord. But Paul had a different kind of problem: He had to forget about his achievements. He had more enthusiasm than anyone in his peer group. He had been at the head of every class, and his accomplishments were far greater than anyone else’s. But after he met Jesus, he said, “None of that matters anymore. All those things are nothing compared to what I’ve found. My goal is to forget all those things so I can press on with what God has called me to do.” What about you? Are you focused on the past? Or are you pressing forward for God?

ALL THINGS NEW

ALL THOSE THINGS ARE NOTHING COMPARED TO WHAT I’VE FOUND IN CHRIST JESUS

THINK ABOUT IT

God made all things new in Paul—his identity, loyalty, goals, and vision for the future. How has God made all things new for you, and are you likewise pressing forward?

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for all You have done and for all that is yet ahead. You have given me life and prepared my future. Therefore, I press on to complete the course for which You created me. Grant me the focus and strength I will need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
