WORD FROM THE HOLY BIBLE FOR TODAY
Deuteronomy 6:6-8 (NIV®)
“These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.”
REFLECTION
BE IDENTIFIED WITH THE WORD OF GOD, TO LEARN IT, AND TO TEACH IT ON ALL OCCASIONS
Moses was reminding God’s people of all He had done for them and what He expected of them. Moses wanted them to understand the importance of passing this information along to their children. You may have seen Orthodox Jewish people with a box on their forehead and a strap wrapped around their arm and hand. They’ve taken these verses literally, placing tiny scrolls of Scripture in the boxes and binding them to their bodies. We shake our heads at the literalism of that, but I appreciate their intentionality toward Scripture—to be identified with it, to learn it, and to teach it to their children. I encourage you to purposefully bring God and His Word into the life of your family—not just with prayers at mealtimes and bedtime, but during your conversations throughout the day.
