WORD FROM THE HOLY BIBLE FOR TODAY

Luke 23:3 (NIV®)

“So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.”

REFLECTION

THE COURAGE AND SINGLE-MINDED FOCUS OF OUR SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST

This is one of the places where we see Jesus’ incredible courage on display. He had been delivered over to Pilate, the Roman governor, for judgment because of the jealousy of the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem. Pilate was known to be a cruel man, but even he understood Jesus was innocent and was reluctant to condemn Him to death. But he also needed the support of these prominent men to keep the uneasy peace. He was looking for a way to solve his dilemma and threw the question to Jesus: “Are you the king of the Jews?” There was one thing for which crucifixion was the certain end: Caesar would tolerate no rivals; if you declared yourself a king, you were done. Jesus could have diverted the conversation with an eloquent defense or some demonstration of His power. Instead, He answered Pilate’s question simply and directly, signing His own death warrant. Such is the courage and single-minded focus of our Savior. He knew His purpose for coming into our world, and He was determined to see it fulfilled.

THINK ABOUT IT

Being this courageous and single-minded about our God-assignment is what will prepare the Church for Jesus’ return.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Jesus, I yield my will—be Lord of all my life. I am in awe of Your courage and determination to take my punishment. I want to live for Your glory and honour. In Your name, Amen.
