WORD FROM THE HOLY BIBLE FOR TODAY

John 1:16

“From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.”

REFLECTION

FROM HIS FULLNESS WE HAVE ALL RECEIVED GRACE UPON GRACE

“Just before the service last Sunday, the little band of praying saints was hard at work fighting for the faith of our people, and for the churches of the Twin Cities, and for the nations, as they prayed. At one point one man prayed the words of John 1:14, 16:
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. . . . For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.
It was one of those epiphany moments for me. God granted in that moment that the word “fullness” — from his fullness — carry a fullness that was extraordinary in its effect on me. I felt some measure of what the word really carries — the fullness of Christ.
I felt some of the wonder that, yes, I had indeed received grace upon grace from this fullness. And I was at that moment receiving grace upon grace. I felt right then that nothing would have been sweeter than to simply sit at his feet — or read my Bible — all afternoon and feel his fullness overflow.
Why did this fullness have such an impact on me — and why is it still to this moment affecting me unusually? In part because . . .
. . . the one from whose fullness I am being drenched with grace is the Word that was with God and was God (John 1:1–2), so that his fullness is the fullness of God — a divine fullness, an infinite fullness;
. . . this Word became flesh, and so was one of us, and was pursuing us with his fullness — it is an accessible fullness;
. . . when this Word appeared in human form, his glory was seen — his is a glorious fullness;
. . . this Word was “the only Son from the Father” (John 1:14) so that the divine fullness was being mediated to me not just from God, but through God — God did not send an angel but his only Son to deliver his fullness;
. . . the fullness of the Son is a fullness of grace — I will not drown in this fullness but be blessed in every way by this fullness;
. . . this fullness is not only a fullness of grace but of truth — I am not being graced with truth-ignoring flattery; this grace is rooted in rock-solid reality.
Is it any wonder, then, that I would feel astonished and full of joy at the fullness of Christ!

ENJOYING GOD'S FULLNESS

FROM HIS FULLNESS WE HAVE ALL RECEIVED GRACE UPON GRACE

THINK ABOUT IT

John 1:16 reminds us of the abundant, overflowing grace we receive through Jesus. Here are five key responses we should reflect on and apply in our daily walk with Him: 1. Live with a Heart of Gratitude Every good thing we have—salvation, strength, wisdom, and daily provision—comes from His fullness. We should cultivate a heart of thanksgiving, recognizing that His grace is undeserved yet freely given (1 Thessalonians 5:18). 2. Depend Fully on Christ His fullness means we lack nothing when we abide in Him. Instead of striving in our own strength, we should rest in His grace, seeking Him daily in prayer, His Word, and worship (2 Corinthians 12:9). 3. Extend Grace to Others Just as we have received grace upon grace, we are called to reflect that grace to those around us. This means forgiving, being patient, and loving even when it’s difficult (Ephesians 4:32). 4. Walk in Confidence, Not Condemnation Because of His grace, we are not defined by our past or our failures. We can walk boldly in our identity as children of God, knowing we are fully accepted and loved in Christ (Romans 8:1). 5. Grow in Spiritual Maturity Grace is not just about salvation—it empowers us to grow and become more like Jesus. We should seek to deepen our relationship with Him, being transformed by His grace daily (Titus 2:11-12).

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, I come before You in awe of Your love and mercy. Thank You for the gift of Jesus, through whom I have received grace upon grace—more than I could ever earn or deserve. Lord, I long to walk in the fullness of this grace, to live in the reality of all You have given me. Shape my heart, transform my mind, and align my life with Your will. Father, fill me with a heart of gratitude. Let me never take Your grace for granted, but instead wake up each day with a spirit of thankfulness. Open my eyes to see Your blessings, big and small, and teach me to rejoice in Your goodness no matter the circumstances. When my heart is tempted to complain, remind me of the abundance I have in Christ. Lord, teach me to depend fully on You. I confess that I often try to do things in my own strength, forgetting that apart from You, I can do nothing. Help me to abide in Jesus daily, to seek Your wisdom in every decision, and to trust that Your grace is sufficient in my weakness. Let my heart rest in the truth that You are my provider, my sustainer, and my source of all I need. Father, help me to extend grace to others. Just as You have freely forgiven me, let me be quick to forgive. Teach me to love even when it’s hard, to be patient even when I feel frustrated, and to show kindness even when it’s undeserved. Make me a reflection of Your heart, that others may see Jesus in the way I live and love. Lord, give me confidence in my identity in You. When the enemy whispers lies of shame, failure, or unworthiness, remind me that I am covered by Your grace. There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, and I stand fully accepted and loved in Your presence. Let me walk boldly in faith, knowing that nothing can separate me from Your love. Father, help me to grow in spiritual maturity. I don’t want to remain stagnant in my faith—I want to be transformed by Your grace every day. Give me a hunger for Your Word, a desire for holiness, and a heart that longs to know You more. Shape me into the image of Christ, that my life may bring You glory. Lord, I surrender to You. Fill me, lead me, and use me. May my life overflow with the grace I have received, and may everything I do reflect the fullness of Jesus in me. I pray this in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
