WORD FROM SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY
Mark 14:35-36 (NLT®)
“He went on a little farther and fell to the ground. He prayed that, if it were possible, the awful hour awaiting him might pass him by. “Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.””
REFLECTION
YOUR WILL LORD JESUS BE DONE, NOT MINE
What is our frequent motive for praying? Often, we pray because we want something to change—some person or some circumstance that seems to be beyond our control. But the change prayer brings is often internal. Listen to Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane: “Everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me.” But what is His greatest desire? “I want your will to be done, not mine.” So, what do we hear being changed? His heart. As grueling as this conversation with His Father was, the result was His heart being aligned firmly with God’s invitation. While we may pray for change, prayer is changing us. When we get our hearts lined up with God’s invitations, nothing can stop the purposes of God from springing forth in our lives.
