“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else.”
REFLECTION
THERE IS NO GOD OF YOUR UNDERSTANDING. GOD IS THE GREAT ‘I AM’
Paul is in Athens, a pagan city, and has seen the idols the people are worshipping. When he sees an altar inscribed, “TO AN UNKNOWN GOD,” he has found an opening to share the good news about the God he worships and serves. “I can tell you who God is,” he says, and then, explains that while God is the Creator of the earth and everything in it, He is not distant from His creation. He is intimately involved in our lives and wants good things for us. He gives us “life, and breath, and everything else.” Our world is full of false gods. Some are represented by statues and idols; others are more mental than physical. When you encounter someone who has put their trust in anything other than Jesus, that is your opportunity to say, “Let me tell you about my God.”
