WORD FROM SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY

John 11:39-40 (NIV®)

“Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.” Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”

REFLECTION

JESUS HAD ANOTHER MOTIVE: HE INTENDED TO PERFORM A MIRACLE

Lazarus’ sisters sent a message to Jesus that His friend was sick, but He waited two days to go to them. By the time Jesus arrived, Lazarus was dead and buried. The sisters were upset and confused. Why hadn’t He come in time to save His friend? But Jesus had another motive: He intended to perform a miracle that would turn their mourning into joy. He wanted the women and their friends to witness it and understand the significance of what had happened. Do you ever wonder why God doesn’t act how and when we want Him to? It can be difficult to see the “why” through our limited vision of His plan and His timing, and sometimes we may never know why. But this I do know: He always acts so someone can see His power at work and recognize the glory of God.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, in great mercy, You provided deliverance through the cross. Open my eyes to see Jesus and my heart to understand Your majesty, splendor, and power. Grant me the strength and courage to follow the path You have chosen for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
