“A person without self-control is like a house with its doors and windows knocked out.”

Can you imagine living in a house with its doors and windows knocked out? You would be completely defenseless against the weather, intruders, even wild animals looking for food and shelter. Solomon says that is our condition when we lack self-control; we are utterly defenseless against the attacks of the world. Self-control is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, and it is the way we regulate, not only our words and our actions, but also our emotions. Without self-control, we can be overcome and ruled by anger, envy, fear, hopelessness, and other destructive feelings. It requires the power of the Spirit of God to live in a way that our emotions are kept in check and directed toward constructive purposes. God created us to feel emotions; they are part of His good design. But He also wants us to exhibit the self-control that is the fruit of the Spirit and harness our energies toward His purposes.
