WORD FROM THE HOLY BIBLE FOR TODAY
John 13:3-5 (NIV®)
“Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.”
REFLECTION
WHEN YOU ARE FEELING WRONGED, OR DESERTED, OR BETRAYED, REMEMBER JESUS’ EXAMPLE
Jesus and His disciples were in Jerusalem to celebrate Passover. These were observant, Jewish men who had marked this event every year of their lives. I imagine things seemed pretty ordinary until Jesus got up and began to wash their feet—feet that, in their day, were a hard-working part of the body. Their world was a dusty one, and their shoes were no more than thin soles held on by straps. Jesus, who knew who He was, why He came, and what awaited Him, humbled Himself and washed the dirt from people who would soon desert or betray Him. When you are feeling wronged, or deserted, or betrayed, remember Jesus’ example. He could have chosen resentment and punishment, but He chose love, humility, and service instead.

KEEP YOUR TOWEL NEAR
WHEN YOU ARE FEELING WRONGED, OR DESERTED, OR BETRAYED, REMEMBER JESUS’ EXAMPLE
Jesus putting on the towel of a servant was an unexpected expression of humility. We want to practice choosing love, humility, and serving others.

Heavenly Father, help me be ready and willing to embrace the work and attitude of a servant toward those You want to express care and love. Let those acts of kindness and service draw others nearer to You and Your Kingdom's purposes. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
