WORD FROM THE HOLY BIBLE FOR TODAY
2 Timothy 2:11-13.
"Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself."
REFLECTION
OUR ONLY HOPE IS LIVING WITH JESUS CHRIST
Paul’s words in 2 Timothy 2:11-13 offer a profound theological reflection on the believer’s union with Christ, perseverance in faith, and the unwavering faithfulness of God. Let’s break it down verse by verse and explore its deeper biblical meaning.
1. "Here is a trustworthy saying"
Paul introduces these statements with a phrase that signals their reliability and importance. In the Pastoral Epistles (1 & 2 Timothy, Titus), Paul often uses this phrase (“trustworthy saying”) to emphasize key doctrinal truths. These statements are possibly part of an early Christian hymn or creed used to teach foundational truths about faith in Christ.
2. "If we died with him, we will also live with him"
This phrase echoes Romans 6:8—"Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him." It reflects the idea of spiritual union with Christ in His death and resurrection.
- Dying with Christ: This refers to the believer’s identification with Christ’s death. When we put our faith in Jesus, we "die" to sin, self, and the old way of life (Galatians 2:20). Baptism symbolizes this death—our old self is buried, and we are raised to new life.
- Living with Christ: This is both a present and future reality. Spiritually, believers experience new life in Christ now (2 Corinthians 5:17). But it also refers to the promise of eternal life with Him in His kingdom (John 11:25-26).
This verse encourages endurance: if we have truly died to ourselves and embraced Christ, we have the guarantee of life with Him now and forever.
3. "If we endure, we will also reign with him"
The theme of endurance is a major part of Paul’s letter to Timothy. Paul himself is suffering in prison at this time, facing execution for his faith (2 Timothy 4:6-8). He is urging Timothy to remain faithful despite opposition.
- Enduring through trials: Scripture repeatedly teaches that believers must persevere in faith despite hardship (Matthew 10:22, James 1:12).
- Reigning with Christ: The reward for faithfulness is co-reigning with Jesus in His future kingdom (Revelation 2:26-27, Revelation 20:6). This promise reflects Jesus’ teaching that those who suffer for His name will be exalted in His kingdom (Matthew 5:10-12).
This verse affirms that perseverance in faith leads to the privilege of ruling with Christ in His future reign.
4. "If we disown him, he will also disown us"
This statement serves as a solemn warning. It aligns with Jesus’ words in Matthew 10:33—"Whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven."
- Disowning Christ: This refers to a deliberate rejection of Jesus, similar to apostasy (Hebrews 6:4-6). It is not about occasional doubt or failure (as seen in Peter’s temporary denial), but a willful turning away from Christ.
- Christ’s judgment: Just as salvation comes through confessing Christ (Romans 10:9), rejecting Him results in being denied by Him on the Day of Judgment.
This verse warns against falling away from faith due to persecution or compromise.
5. "If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself"
This final line highlights God’s unwavering faithfulness. Even when we stumble in faith, God’s character remains unchanged.
- "If we are faithless": This refers to moments of weakness, doubt, or struggle in our faith.
- "He remains faithful": Unlike humans, God does not change (Malachi 3:6). His promises, His character, and His covenant faithfulness remain firm.
- "For he cannot disown himself": God’s nature is truth and faithfulness (Numbers 23:19, 1 Corinthians 1:9). He cannot act against His own promises.
This verse is a source of comfort: while believers must remain faithful, our security rests in God’s unchanging character, not our own perfection.
Key Takeaways
- Union with Christ – True believers die to self and live a new life in Christ.
- Endurance leads to glory – Faithfulness through trials results in eternal reward.
- Rejection leads to judgment – Those who deny Christ will face consequences.
- God is always faithful – Even when believers falter, God’s promises never fail.
Paul is urging Timothy—and all believers—to stand firm in faith, endure suffering, and trust in God’s ultimate faithfulness. It’s a call to both warning and encouragement, reminding us that while our actions have consequences, God’s faithfulness is our ultimate hope.

WE DIED WITH CHRIST
OUR ONLY HOPE IS LIVING WITH JESUS CHRIST
As a follower of Jesus Christ, 2 Timothy 2:11-13 provides deep encouragement and a call to steadfastness. Here are four key points to take to heart and act upon regarding our place and responsibility in Christ: Live in the Reality of Our New Life in Christ “If we died with Him, we will also live with Him.” We are called to die to our old self and live a transformed life in Christ (Galatians 2:20). This means walking in holiness, surrender, and the power of the Holy Spirit daily. Persevere in Faith and Trials “If we endure, we will also reign with Him.” Endurance in suffering, trials, and persecution for Christ is part of the Christian journey (James 1:12). Our perseverance has eternal rewards, including reigning with Christ in His kingdom. Never Deny Christ “If we disown Him, He will also disown us.” We must boldly confess Christ in all circumstances (Matthew 10:33). Even in a world that opposes God, we should stand firm in our faith, reflecting His truth and love. Trust in God’s Faithfulness, Even in Our Weakness “If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot disown Himself.” This verse is a powerful reminder that God’s faithfulness does not depend on our performance. Even when we struggle or fall short, God remains true to His promises and His character. What is Being Said in Verse 13? Verse 13 highlights God’s unwavering nature. While humans may fail, doubt, or be weak in faith, God remains constant. His faithfulness is rooted in His very being—He cannot go against His own character. This is both a warning and an encouragement: A warning: We should not take God's grace for granted by becoming complacent in our faith. An encouragement: Even in our moments of struggle, God’s love, truth, and promises stand firm. He is always ready to restore us when we return to Him in repentance and trust. This passage calls us to remain faithful, endure in Christ, and trust in God’s faithfulness no matter what.

Heavenly Father, I come before You with a humble heart, longing to grow in faith, endurance, and unwavering devotion to You. You have called me to die to myself and live in Christ, and I ask for Your strength to walk in that truth each day. Lord, help me to die with Christ—to surrender my selfish desires, my fears, and anything that holds me back from fully following You. Fill me with the power of Your resurrection, that I may live with Him, walking in newness of life, filled with the joy of salvation. Teach me to endure in times of hardship, trials, and persecution. When my faith is tested, when the world opposes Your truth, help me to stand firm, trusting that those who remain faithful will reign with You. Give me a heart that clings to Your promises, knowing that nothing I suffer for Your sake is in vain. Father, guard me from ever denying You. Keep my heart from fear and compromise. If I am ever tempted to shrink back, remind me that You are worth everything—more than my comfort, more than my reputation, more than my very life. Let my words, my actions, and my entire being boldly declare, “Jesus is Lord!” And Lord, when I stumble, when my faith wavers, when I feel weak—remind me of Your great faithfulness. Even when I fail, You do not change. You are steadfast and true, for You cannot deny Yourself. Let this truth be my anchor, my confidence, and my hope. Make me a witness who reflects Your love, a servant who endures with joy, and a disciple who remains steadfast to the end. By Your Spirit, transform me into the image of Christ, that my life may bring glory to You. I pray this in the name of Jesus, my Saviour and King. Amen.
