WORD FROM THE HOLY BIBLE FOR TODAY
Isaiah 29:13 (NIV®)
“These people come near to me with their mouth and honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.”

GOD CAUTIONS US ABOUT THIS KIND OF ATTITUDE TOWARD OUR FAITH
Preachers have a lot of opinions and some funny stories about providing outlines to follow while they teach—especially if the outline has blanks to fill in. Sometimes people are so eager to fill in the next blank, they stop listening for anything else. They show up, sing some worship songs, fill in their blanks, and think their business with God is done for another week. God cautions us about this kind of attitude toward our faith. He desires so much more than a fill-in-the-blank relationship. Although His standards have never changed, and the Ten Commandments have never been revised, He wants more than rule-followers; He wants our hearts. He wants people to love Him because we are grateful for what He has done and want to please Him and serve Him. So, by all means, fill in those blanks on the outline. But don’t let that be the sum total of your relationship with the Lord.

GOD CAUTIONS US ABOUT THIS KIND OF ATTITUDE TOWARD OUR FAITH
Our heart is a symbol of love. When we give our hearts to Jesus, we surrender our will for His and trust Him to guide our lives. Our obedience then becomes our greatest expression of love for Him.

Heavenly Father, forgive me for when anything else has overshadowed or defined how I relate to You. I thank You for the wonderful new relationship with You that is available through my Lord, Jesus. Help me give You all that I am. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
