“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”

It can be hard to pray for people we don’t agree with about important things—especially when those people have authority over us. But that is exactly what we are called to do. We are to pray they will make choices and decisions that will honour God. We are to petition the Lord for these things and intercede for those who do not know to pray for themselves. Then, we are to express our gratitude to God for any good thing that happens on their watch. Why should we pray specifically for those in authority? So that we will be able to live peaceful, quiet, and godly lives. Most importantly, we should pray they will understand the truth from God’s perspective and come to a saving knowledge of Him.
